“I’ve made some garden stakes that turned out quite nicely for very little money.
I begin with any kind of a pole/post/stake/spindle I have on hand. I
scour sales & flea markets for used chair & table legs.
I’ve used anything fromstairway spindles & handrails to shovel handles to flagpoles to closet rods.
My latest was a large, oddly shaped piece
Once I clean the piece I spray it basic white so the colors I paint on
will be true without the darker ones showing thru. Depending on your
painting skills, you can do simple stripes or patches of color using
To facilitate planting it in the ground, I usually drill a hole in the
bottom & drive a length of pipe into the hole. I also found spindles that
were threaded to screw together & used the extension for a paint roller
that fit perfectly into the bottom piece.
For the top, I either drill small a hole & screw in a wooden finial or I
drill a larger hole to accommodate a solar light. Just twist off the
bottom stake leaving the battery case to slide into the hole. A bit of
hot glue around the base of the solar light will keep rainwater out of
